Here are some answers to the most common questions we receive about volunteering for PSO. If you have additional questions, feel free to send us an email to ask!

Why should I volunteer with PSO?

Because science is fun! We're not talking about lab science- cleaning test tubes, doing tedious titrations, or anything like that. We're talking about elementary school science: the fun stuff that got you interested in science in the first place, before you learned how much work can be involved. PSO is meant to be fun- for our volunteers as much as the students we serve.

What is the weekly time commitment for PSO? When does PSO take place?

PSO volunteers are expected to commit to attending one of our three science clubs every week during the semester, barring public school or Brown University holidays. After school clubs run from 3PM to 5PM, so including transport and supply gathering time you can expect to be involved in PSO from about 2:45 to 5:15 each week. The precise schedule of the after school program differs for each of the two schools we run programs at, so the exact timing will depend on which days you are available.

What days do PSO science clubs meet?

Right now we have committed to running our science club at Asa Messer Elementary School on Wednesdays. Our Science Clubs at William D'Abate Elementary will take place on Tuesdays (Grades K-2) and Thursdays (Grades 3-5).

Are there time commitments beyond the weekly science club meeting?

Yes. This semester there will be a mandatory training session, scheduled for Sunday, October 4 from 5 to 8 PM. Additionally, we require our PSO teams to meet weekly to plan lessons, prepare or make arrangements for supplies, and briefly discuss a weekly topic or method for improving your science teaching skills. The purpose of the weekly meeting is just to make sure that everyone is ready for that week's activity.

What responsibilities to PSO team leaders have?

PSO team leaders are responsible for maintaining contact with the volunteers in their team, taking student attendance at the beginning of Science Club, and ensuring that someone is responsible for gathering the supplies and materials necessary for a week’s lesson. PSO team leaders also aid the coordinator in facilitating weekly team meetings.

Are there other opportunities for Leadership in PSO?

Yes! We are currently looking for volunteers who are interested in, or have experience with, fundraising, grant writing, and forming on-campus collaborations with other student groups. We are also open to suggestions for PSO lessons; if you have a topic that you are especially interested in, we would love to help you turn it into a science club lesson.
